Bottom line, not the most attractive woods I've been in - although the 'forest' overall may be ancient its present trees are not, mostly rather scrappy conifers - but still a pleasant place to stroll especially if you can come armed with a map and avoid weekends that are busy with bikers.Since 1986, the Friends of the Metro Parks’ Hiking Stick Program has been encouraging visitors to explore nature nearby! Now more than 35 years later, the Hiking Stick Program remains a popular activity. The casual visitor to Brackenridge Park in San Antonio, Texas, may be totally unaware that the 349-acre park, with its picnic areas, baseball fields, playgrounds, pavilions, walking trails, museum, zoo and golf course, occupies some of the most historically rich land in the city. So be prepared to get completely lost unless you go pre-armed with a map down-loaded from the internet (and retrospectively we only found one that would have been worth having). Worst news is that there are no maps or waymarked routes for what is quite a large area of woodland. Bad news is that a fair proportion of bikers career around without regard for others and either don't possess or don't know how to use a bicycle bell, although those we encountered were mostly polite and considerate. ![]() More than 70 cars in the small car park! Good news is that the paths created as bike trails are hard-surfaced and were firm underfoot, while older grassy paths were a quagmire after wet weather (especially where they had been churned up by bikes). Returned here for the first time in many (10-15) years to find that what was once a place for a quiet contemplative walk down grassy woodlend rides had been turned into a mountain bikers' playground. ![]()
